Open-source CAE and software selection

OpenFOAM, CalculiX, Gmsh, Netgen, ParaView, FreeCAD and Python can be combined into transparent CFD and FEA workflows.

Numerical structural model in a CAE toolchain
Services

CFD simulation · FEA structural analysis · Multiphysics & optimization

Applications

Aerospace · Off-highway · Process & plant engineering

Roles in the toolchain

OpenFOAM provides a CFD solver environment and CalculiX structural and thermal FEA. Gmsh and Netgen create meshes, ParaView processes result fields, and FreeCAD can connect geometry and preprocessing tasks.

Selection by requirements

Physics, model size, interfaces, automation, quality assurance and team capability govern software selection. License cost alone is not a sufficient criterion.

  • Solver and model capability
  • CAD and mesh interfaces
  • Reproducible scripts
  • HPC and Linux operation
  • Documentation and long-term maintainability

Automation and quality

Linux and Python support variant execution, data checks, post-processing and reporting. Benchmarks and project-specific checks are part of a dependable toolchain introduction.
