Engineering question

The muffler needed a position that did not impose unacceptable restriction on flow through the shaft.

Model & approach

  • Represent multiple installation positions as CFD variants
  • Compare volume flow and pressure distribution through the shaft
  • Assess local restrictions and unfavorable inlet flow

Boundary conditions

  • Existing shaft and available installation positions
  • Back pressure and airflow as selection criteria
  • Acoustic performance outside the described CFD model

Results of the assessment

  • Installation position changed the resistance of the complete shaft.
  • One variant provided the preferred balance between packaging and flow resistance.
  • One of the assessed positions was selected as the preferred system configuration.

Engineering consequence

The preferred position was carried into further design; acoustic requirements require a separate assessment.

Context

The project account provides no absolute pressure, flow or sound values.
