Engineering question

The cooling concept for a new machine needed an early check for poor airflow paths, excessive resistance and possible hot-air recirculation.

Model & approach

  • Model the engine, hydraulics, fan, coolers, openings and enclosure
  • Calculate velocity, pressure and temperature for the intended operating conditions
  • Vary opening placement, airflow path and cooling-component selection

  • Assessment during conceptual design
  • Heat sources and component characteristics from available development data
  • Enclosed installation with defined air inlets and outlets

Results of the assessment

  • The initial arrangement promoted disrupted flow and increased pressure loss.
  • Warm discharge air could return to the region upstream of the cooler.
  • Opening position and area strongly influenced the supply to the cooling components.

Engineering consequence

The next design stage focused on revised openings, a more direct airflow route and coordinated fan and cooler selection.

Context

The consolidated project accounts contain no complete load table or final physical-test result.
