Engineering question

A new unit needed a safe cooling concept for hot ambient operation before the physical enclosure was fixed.

Model & approach

  • Compare baseline, extended hood and hood-with-openings variants
  • Model an open configuration as a theoretical reference
  • Assess airflow, pressure buildup and thermal fields

Boundary conditions

  • Thermally demanding example operating condition
  • Motor, compressor and coolers as thermal components
  • Four enclosure states

Results of the assessment

  • The baseline enclosure restricted airflow.
  • A larger hood increased the available flow volume.
  • Strategically positioned openings offered another design lever.

Engineering consequence

Concept selection could focus on hood length and the position of inlet and outlet openings.

Context

The study supported concept selection; subsequent prototype measurements are outside the scope of this example.
