Engineering question

Separator baffles had to remain suspended in the flow without unwanted rotation or becoming trapped in pipe bends.

Model & approach

  • Represent the pipe bend and baffle geometry as a 3-D flow domain
  • Compare incidence, pressure distribution and rotational tendency
  • Iterate baffle form and orientation

Results of the assessment

  • The analysis located flow states associated with rotation or sticking risk.
  • Pressure and velocity fields explained the fluid forces acting on the baffle.
  • Geometry and orientation emerged as direct design parameters.

The variant study produced a form and orientation recommendation for the modeled pipe system.
